World Cup 2010 - GOOOOOAAALL!

I am a soccer fair-weather fan. I willingly admit it. But my excitement for the FIFA World Cup that starts this Friday is building. I have a schedule of the games and am planning to watch constant soccer in the next few weeks.
The ever hilarious and never completely serious ESPN has a great commercial with US team player Landon Donovan.

Friday Fun Adventures! - Take One

The Summer of Friday Fun is off to a great start, even if we haven't yet done anything on a Friday. Shonna and I celebrated Memorial Day with a faux BBQ and a mini-marathon of the first season of Doctor Who.
Good Times.
Here are some photos of our indoor George Forman faux BBQ.
Proper BBQ food: hotdogs, chips, corn on the cob and pop. mmm.

We discovered that if you don't have those cool handles to put in the end of the corn, you need to wait for it to cool a bit before trying to pick it up. Just a tip.

This is me proving that you can't eat corn with any grace or manners. Yum.

Heck of a Weekend!

For those of you that know me, you know that my love for the Doctor runs deep. I think it's a genetic thing. My dad watched Doctor Who back in its first incarnation and I distinctly remember him trying to sing the theme song to me and my brother. Now that the show has successfully rebooted I am a full-blown addict.Saturday night was the 5th season premiere on BBC America. (and yes I know that it's been on for three weeks in the UK so watching future episodes online is a possibility, but I've chosen to watch it with the rest of the country...well most of the country...the honest part) In addition to being the start of a season, which means new adventures every week instead of sporadic "specials" for a year - blech!, the big excitement is that there's a new Doctor. And as much as I loved David Tennant's space man, Matt Smith has quickly showed he's got the right stuff for the job.
I am really pumped about this upcoming season and I will fly my freak flag and admit that I have watched Saturday's episode three times now. It's that fun.

In addition to the Doctor Who high, I also went and saw How to Train Your Dragon (in 3D of course). What fun! The characters were these great stereotypes, which is exactly what you would expect, but they did it so well. There were plenty of laughs that weren't in the previews and the 3D really did make a difference. I would love to see a sequel if they made one. I would freely go back to that world for another adventure. (and random tid-bit: according to the end credits, David Tennant does a minor voice in the movie - I'm tellin' ya, small world)

More TV Goodies

The new shows just keep coming. So far this week I've been impressed.

NCIS - They did a creative take on wrapping up the season finale cliff-hanger from last year, but still leaving it open to see how things will progress this season. I was glad to discover that watching all those re-runs on USA hasn't turned me off of the new season.

NCIS: LA - They made some changes to the set-up of the show since they did the introductory episode during NCIS last season. The blonde boss from CSI is gone (too bad) and replaced by the tiny woman from The Incredibles (jury's out on that one). It seems to have shifted from a large team format to a partners with office back-up format. I do like Chris O'Donnell and LL Cool J's chemistry so that might work, although I hope they don't ignore the other techies.

Castle - It just keeps getting better and better. I'm impressed each week and can't stop giggling at Nathan Fillion's hilarity. I follow this great blog The Park Bench, and her post sums it up better than I can.

Still to come this week: CSI, FlashForward and Community, but I'm gone Thursday nights at my Bible Study Small Group so I'm going to have to figure out a system for watching them OnDemand (Comcast) or online. When I do see them, I'll let you know what I think, since that's what I like to do.

Tis the Season...

...for new shows. One of the best things about fall is the new TV season. Unfortunately, I tend to fall hard for shows that are quickly canceled, but it never stops me. In the last few years TV schedules have gone all over the map. It used to be everything premiered in September, ran for the school year and re-ran during the summer. Now there are shows premiering in mid-winter or whole seasons running during the summer.

For example, Leverage has had two seasons in less than a year and 10 Things I Hate About You had their first season in a couple months this summer. It breaks up the routine, but can be confusing and easy to miss stuff.

As for the new fall season, I've only seen two new shows so far, but I liked them both. Glee is a great mix between High School Musical, 90210 and Napoleon Dynamite. I'm excited to see what they do with it.

I also watched The Vampire Diaries last night. It has potential. It's based on a series of books that have been on my "To Read" list for a while now so that upgrades it in my head. The thing that stood out for me the most, though, was the music. It was FIERCE. So many good, mood-setting songs, and I had actually heard of some of them before. Because the internet is an information overload I found a list on someone's blog:

Sort of by Silversun Pickups
Here We Go by Matt Kearney
Consoler of the Lonely by The Raconteurs
Say (All I Need) by OneRepublic
Take Me to the Riot by Stars
Thinking of You by Katy Perry
Kids by MGMT
Running Up That Hill by Placebo (my current favorite moody song)
Death by White Lies
Back to Me by The All-American Rejects
Siren Song by Bat for Lashes
Never Say Never by The Fray

I may just watch the show for the music.
I hope the rest of the shows I try out this fall do as well. Fingers crossed none of them get canceled early and break up with me.

Flight of the Conchords

I have to thank Shonna for making me watch Flight of the Conchords videos on Youtube. Wow. These guys are great. They are "formerly New Zealand's fourth most popular folk parody duo" and they only get funnier the more you watch them. They have a TV show on HBO, but I haven't seen it. If their live shows are any indication, I'm guessing it's great.
I do have to add a small warning. They are clever and unique and understated, but they aren't for everybody. They kind of remind me of The Office, because they take themselves very seriously even though they're being ridiculous so if you would rather watch Adam Sandler/Judd Apatow type comedy this won't be your thing.
If you're still interested, here are the videos you should watch:
Start with Issues (aka Think About It)
Next try The Humans Are Dead
Then Albi the Racist Dragon
Then Jenny
And if you're still with it, watch Hiphopopotamus vs Rhymenoceros
Brilliant!

Reality TV

In general, I am not a fan of reality television. I think it’s a scary trend in American TV viewing and I’m constantly amazed/appalled at the new reality shows I see advertised. It’s not that I’m not aware of what’s happening in that part of TV Land, I see the commercials and the news stories on the internet, but I’m rarely intrigued by the types of shows in that genre.
But now I feel I must confess that I have recently become addicted to two reality shows. They aren’t necessarily new shows, but I’ve just recently stumble upon them so they’re new to me. They both fall into the category of “cameras following people around in their everyday lives”, and I think my favorite thing about both these shows is that they are nice, clean, pleasant people that are being filmed. There’s no back-stabbing or plotting or greed or sex or plain craziness. It’s just people living their lives while being filmed.
The first one is Jon and Kate plus 8 on TLC. It’s a show that follows a couple (Jon and Kate) who have a set of twins that are seven and a set of sextuplets that are three. Two seven-year-olds and six three-year-olds. Wow. Their house can get crazy, but there’s lots of love, lots of order and they’re all very entertaining.
The second one I’m addicted to is Ace of Cakes on the Food Network. This show is amazing! It follows Charm City Cakes in Baltimore that has an extremely talented staff that make some extremely cool cakes. They make cakes that are like works of art, and it’s so fun to see them start from scratch and go through the whole process of shaping and decorating to get the finished product. And the staff are funny! They have so much fun together working and figuring out how to best make and decorate the cakes. It’s great fun to watch.
So there…I’ve admitted to liking two shows in a genre I tend to look down on. I’m a hypocrite…Dang.
